The Four Major Decisions in Parenting Plans

Did you know that when you get divorced or petition for legitimation, you and your co-parent will need to decide how you will handle major decisions for the children? Not just that parenting is a major responsibility and you have to make decisions. No, we’re talking four specific areas of a child’s life that parents have to make decisions about.

They four areas to be addressed are: Education, Non-Emergency Health Care, Religion and Extracurricular Activities.

Hopefully you and your co-parent will always agree on these things and it’s no big deal. But, if you disagree - like really, really disagree - how will the decision get made?

This is the question you will be required to answer before the judge signs your order. You can agree that you will approach these matters together and try every trick in the book (including mediation) to arrive at an agreement that is best for the kid and family. But, if you cannot agree, one of you must be the tie-breaker. And you must put this in writing and sign off on it.

So how do you decide? Listen to me talk about that here.
